Imagination Is More Important Than Knowledge

This is the project I was given over the summer holiday. The brief was to look at the Pros & Cons of sharing files via the internet, how it affects the creative industry and in what way will it change design communication.

I decided to base it on the idea that by constantly sharing and using images found on the internet, you can lose your own creativity. I found a quote by Albert Einstein that inspired the outcomes of this project. "Imagination is more important than knowledge'. I created a series of images using forms of mixed media and mark marking, collaged with images relating to the word or quote on that specific piece. I used words that could encourage you to use your imagination and quotes to reflect these words.

I am going to select a few of these pieces and create a series of posters that will encourage you to use your imagination.

Back Row Brighton - Book Proposal

This was a live brief set by QueenSpark books. They have a book being published called 'Back Row Brighton, Cinema Going in Brighton & Hove'. My design (Image 1) was not chosen but I got some good feedback. I chose to create an vintage using old photographs, textures and colours. On my final design I played on the idea of putting the title of the book on the front of the cinema where they used to display the titles of films.

Woody Guthrie CD

The brief was to create a 16 page booklet for the Woody Guthrie CD 'This Land is Your Land, The Asch Recordings'. I created 8 images which had Woody Guthrie lyrics & quotes on the back on the printed image. I kept each image separate so that you could have a series of prints. I created each image to represent parts of Woody Guthrie's life. This included the war years, the dust bowl, oklahoma, New York and The War. I also made a slip case & box in which the prints & CD are stored. Photographs of final outcomes to be included.

Handmade Type

The brief was to take three quotes and make a piece of handmade typography using no imagery. Image one was created by using cut out text and paint. Images two and three were created by tracing over mixed media and using water colours. Image 4 was created by tracing over text. All of the typography was taken from existing typefaces and edited. I had enjoyed creating these pieces.

Against Fur Campaign.

These are a few variations I created for a brief I was given to create a poster for the Anti Fur Campaign. I decided to use mixed media and the colour red to represent the killing of animals. I used negative words associated with the fur industry for the typography.

CD Cover Re-Design

CD Project brief. I had to re design an existing CD booklet. I chose to re design Alexisonfire's 'Watch Out!' Album. I created a concertina folded booklet. These two images go back to back. I chose a limited colour palette. I used photographs that I had took of the band at previous gigs. I also used photographs from another photographer for the ones I did not take. I used the lyrics to express some of the intensity of the music. Photograph of final product to come.

Bodoni

Bodoni. I had a brief to create a 4 page spread on the typeface Bodoni. Images 2 & 3 would be on a double page. I wanted to show the symmetry of each letter and to show the many variations of the typeface. I am very happy with the final outcomes.

War Memorial

The brief for this project was to create a response to my local War Memorial. I am from St. Austell in Cornwall, my local memorial is situated by the side of the town church and the end of the town. Most people have forgotten that it is there. This made me think, If the local people have forgotten about the memorial, then maybe they have forgotten about the people it represents. I decided to base my project on the forgotten heroes. I found old photographs of war images and combined them with my own mixed media. I used all of the above images to create a book. (Photograph of final outcome to come).
